  • Betty White Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at PromaxBDA: The Conference 2012

    Jun 14, 2012
After more than 70 years of fabulous success in one of the toughest industries in the world, Betty White, at age 90, has somehow managed to become more popular than ever. The enduring success of her personal brand is unparalleled in television history, and there is no one more deserving of this year's PromaxBDA Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to White today in front of a packed Diamond Ballroom at the Conference.

Before White accepted her award, she sat down for an onstage conversation with Giuliana Rancic, "E! News" managing editor and anchor.

Rancic kicked things off by asking White to discuss her personal brand and how she would describe it. "Animal lover," White replied, in typical humble fashion, turning the attention away from herself and toward her animal welfare work. "I have to stay in show business to pay for my animal causes," she said, a sentiment backed up by another story she told about meeting Barack Obama and spending five minutes with the President and 30 minutes with his dog.

When Rancic inquired about her seven decades of success as an actress, White chalked it up to "writing... If it isn't on the paper, you can't do it!" -- a sentiment that the numerous creatives in the crowd applauded enthusiastically.

With two TV series currently airing, White is one of the busiest women in show business, despite the fact she is 90 years old. When this was pointed out, the crowd burst into applause, but White waved them off, joking, "I didn't do anything to be 90, it just happened."

"But how do you do it all?" asked Rancic.
"Not very well," White replied with self-deprecating good humor, then said, "I just love the work I do, and I'm blessed with good health."

White professed to loving the medium of television "because it reaches into people's homes and builds friendships." Discussing her famous Superbowl commercial in which she gets tackled into the mud during a game of football, she said, "I lay down in that mud and thought I was going to freeze my tookus off!"

Before White accepted her Lifetime Achievement Award to a standing ovation Rancic thanked her for bringing so much joy to the world and being such a "beautiful, shining light."

"Oh have I got you all fooled," White told the crowd, with a wry wink.
  • Beatboxing and Brain Science: Highlights from PromaxBDA: The Conference Opening Day

    Jun 13, 2012
    By Justin W. Sanders

PromaxBDA: The Conference 2012 kicked off yesterday in style... freestyle. In a surprise appearance, British beatbox master Reeps One opened the Conference Welcome with a series of heart-pounding percussion riffs, all made with his mouth and a microphone. The exhilarating performance set the tone for an opening day full of innovation, creativity and excitement.

After a few uplifting opening remarks from PromaxBDA president and CEO Jonathan Block-Verk, author, neuroscientist and "Wired" contributing editor Jonah Lehrer took the stage for an absorbing session on creativity and the origins of inspiration. Weaving stories of airplane designs, Beethoven and the bathrooms at Pixar, Lehrer discussed the perils of brainstorming and the need to relax sometimes to give inspiration the chance to strike. "When we are not relaxed, we are really focused, but that means we are focused on the problem," Lehrer said. "We are hopelessly stuck and stumped and that is when getting away from your desk is so important."

Following Lehrer, the session "Media Leaders' Summit" imparted a fascinating array of insights on the changing role of technology in media marketing and how linear television programming is evolving into a new model. Panelists such as Machinima chairman and CEO Allen DeBevoise, and PBS CEO Paula Kerger answered questions from moderator Joe Flint, staff writer at the "Los Angeles Times."

"We have the same financial challenges that we had when we started, but there are so many more opportunities and platforms now," Kerger said at one point. The rest of the session delved into those opportunities, focusing on new programming and distribution models that address the ever-evolving nature of media consumption.

Then there was Bruce Mau, powerhouse Chicago designer and deep thinker whose Massive Change project seeks to take design beyond material things and into the world around us. Holding his creative keynote audience rapt, Mau's session "24 Hours of Massive Change" covered the role design can play in today's marketing industry and how design can be brought into our workplaces and our lives.

Tuesday's sessions wrapped, fittingly, with "It's a Wrap With Ryan Murphy," a casual onstage conversation between the great TV writer and showrunner and Vulture senior editor Denise Martin. Their talk roamed from Murphy's recent hosting of an Obama fundraiser ("I was struck by how many of my neighbors put out Mitt Romney signs after I screwed up their traffic for two days.") to how his past career as a journalist helps him be a more disciplined writer ("I never have writer's block."), to why he doesn't use Twitter ("Me and two glasses of red wine and Twitter is not a good idea.").

Murphy's wry, witty humor provided a worthy transition into the evening's festivities -- namely, the dazzling Opening Night Party held at Griffith Observatory. With telescopes set up on the lawn, a special presentation from PBS/Nova, and food and drink provided by Wolfgang Puck, the gala was a packed affair, as shuttle after shuttle brought more than 1,000 happy Conference attendees up into the Hollywood Hills to one of Los Angeles's most iconic landmarks.

  • Notes From PromaxBDA: The Conference 2012 – Conference Educators Forum

    Jun 12, 2012
    By Justin W. Sanders
With reporting from Eunice Roh and Danae Young

While PromaxBDA: The Conference attendees and staff prepped this morning for this afternoon’s Conference Welcome, a smaller but no less crucial event was already in full swing by 9:15 a.m.: the Creative Educators Forum (CEF), an initiative of PromaxBDA’s Industry Development and Diversity program. Its opening session, “What a Difference a Partnership Makes: Building Access Channels for Student Talent Into the Media and Entertainment Industry," focused on the synergy between employers and students, on the student’s desire to learn and the employer’s opportunity to educate them while also facilitating the opportunity to produce work.

As PromaxBDA president and CEO Jonathan Block-Verk said in his opening address to the educators in attendance, CEF seeks to “build a relationship with the academic community and help you help your students get into this [media] industry… Today’s forum is about you, about creating those relationships.”

CEF moderator Katerina Zacharia, PromaxBDA’s director of industry development and diversity, continued Block-Verk’s thread: “There are so many disciplines represented [at CEF],” she said. “Here is the opportunity to talk and give voice. It’s not about just the educators coming to the forum but us going into the institutions. We want to talk, we want to collaborate.”

Noted speakers in this session included Rob Battles, SVP of creative services for AMC Networks Inc.; Bill Galbreath, education director of design and technology schools at Full Sail University; Pamela Goodale, associate cooperative education coordinator for the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University; Chris Hannan, SVP of Fox Sports Media Group; and David Saphirstein, director of creative technology at ESPN.

“Northeastern has become so popular because of our cooperative education program,” said Pamela Goodale, speaking on the university’s College of Arts, Media and Design’s innovative option that lets students alternate between six months of education and six months of paid work experience. The advantage to employers is that they can create meaningful positions and those positions will already be covered, she noted. Though Northeastern is located in Boston, where industry jobs are harder to come by, the college has tried to compensate through a partnership with AMC.

Representing another partnership between academia and industry, Full Sail University’s Bill Galbreath and ESPN’s David Saphirstein discussed how their collaborative student program has grown from a technology-focused training to logo design opportunities, soccer coverage and much more. “Having access to that generation is just tremendous,” said Saphirstein of the Full Sail students who come to ESPN. “They have new ideas and see media in a different way.” ESPN also offers workshops, speakers and one-on-one training to students.

Fox Sports Media Group’s Chris Hannan spoke of his company’s “Creative University” program, which works with different education institutions to bring students to Fox. “At Fox Sports, education is our priority,” he said. “On the grassroots level and community and at higher level… I think the biggest thing for us is just being flexible. We pick schools that make sense for them to work with us.”

Other session on today's CEF schedule include “Industry Meet Educators, Educators Meet Industry. Now Let’s Work!” and “The Evolution of Transmedia in the Media Landscape.”

    The Best of Integrated
In the world of TiVo, consumers are now whizzing by commercials. One of the best ways to get them to slow down and watch advertising seems to be through branded integration and promo-tainment, a win-win for both the network and the advertiser if done effectively. As a company that creates a lot of ad sales spots. I think it's important to stay on top of current trends and to see how others are pushing creative limits while still maintaining effective co-branded content.

    Re-thinking the Episodic Promo
The episodic promo is finally getting the love it deserves! I think episodics are the unsung heroes of viewer engagement and brand stickiness. Woo-hoo for the episodic!

Around the World in 45 Minutes: Global Gold-Winning Work from the Past Year
No man is an island. I think it's important to stay on top of world trends and to see what TV magic is being created by other countries.

Making the Most of the Other 50%
Everyone should be going to this session. It’s becoming more of a requirement by advertisers that we cater to this ever-growing population.

    The Best of Integrated
Branded integrations, when done right, can be the best pieces of short form content during a commercial break. This session speaks my language. I am excited to see what my other counterparts in the industry are doing. I need more ammunition to show sales what other advertisers are willing to do so I can do it too!

The 2012 Top 5 Media Insights You Need to Know… Or Perish
The word “perish” scares me so I think I better get some insight on my audience. Re-thinking how we reach our viewers is key to our success and the longevity of TV… whatever TV is becoming.
